Joondalup is a regional municipality in Perth, Western Australia, located 26 km north of Perth Central Business District and is the primary urban centre for Northern suburbs. The city of Joondalup also covers the town centres of Hillarys and Warwick.
The Corridor Plan for Perth was developed in the 1960s and adopted in the 70s, which created five sub-regional centres called Fremantle, Joondalup, Midland, Armadale and Rockingham. The plan was passed and enacted in the Parliament in 1973.
The chief purpose for creating these nodules was to decentralise and minimise burdens on the CBD. Several regional shopping centres grew in the areas, and a structural plan was developed to regulate their activities.
Joondalup began to assume importance only after the 1980s. Houses were built in the area, and that’s when commercial growth started, and the region became the “city of the north”. Joondalup is now the critical regional centre for the north of Perth and included in the futuristic diversification plans in the Directions 2031 Strategy.
The city gets its name from Joondalup Lake, which is a Noongar word recorded in 1837. It means a place of whiteness.
Joondalup has no actual boundaries, but the Australian Statistical Bureau has determined an area covering the city north of Ocean Reef Road with a regional shopping centre and Joondalup railway station for a transportation hub. The site is surrounded by the
The area also covers the following suburbs:
Joondalup has an excellent public transport system that includes free CAT bus services, covering Route 10 and 11. The city has a robust railway system with three stations in Edgewater, Currambine and Joondalup CBD, directly linked to Perth CBD.

You will also find Burns Beach in the North and Beaumaris Beach in Ocean Reef with excellent paragliding, surfing and boating facilities.
